Last updated July 23, 2024.
The non-truck TRU (trailer TRU, domestic shipping container TRU, railcar TRU, and TRU generator set) technologies listed below are exempt from the requirements of the TRU ATCM. Listing of trade names does not imply CARB endorsement in any way.
Non-Truck TRU Technologies not Regulated under the TRU ATCM
Non-truck TRU technologies in the table below are not equipped with an integral diesel engine in the TRU housing (therefore they do not meet the current definition of a TRU). These are either not zero-emission technologies because there are vehicle engine emissions related to powering the refrigeration system, or are zero-emission technologies that may be used to transport refrigerated goods, but do not meet the definition of a TRU.

Non-Truck TRU Zero Emission Technologies
Zero-emission (ZE) TRUs are not powered by an internal combustion engine in any way. Electric power for compressors, fans, and controls may come from on-board batteries, provided they are not re-charged by an alternator or generator that is driven by the vehicle engine or powertrain, trailer wheels, trailer axle/differential, or any other contrivance that adds to the vehicle engine load. Examples of ZE TRUs include, but are not limited to, TRUs with refrigeration systems and/or fans that are powered by batteries when on-road and use battery chargers that are plugged into the grid while stationary or connected to on-board solar panels.
