System Construction and Development:
Preliminary engineering development and manufacturing is complete.
Construction of the initial two satellites is underway by Planet and NASA JPL, along with accompanying data processing platforms.
Program Development:
CARB staff and the Carbon Mapper team are working to improve the quality of the data and reduce the time required to transform data into mitigation actions. CARB is also working to collaborate with other jurisdictions beyond California. CARB’s role in the partnership will include:
Developing capacity within CARB to be able to handle and validate the data stream
Optimizing California satellite observation decks (I.e., where the satellites are tasked to look) to maximize the mitigation potential of the data and to identify methane plumes in communities that live next to major pollution sources
Continue conducting airborne studies to support the satellites
Sharing our results and findings with other jurisdictions, and making our data publicly available.
Launch:
Launch of the first two satellites are expected in early 2024
Once in space, the satellites will undergo a commissioning period of approximately 90 days before data become readily available.
