On the eve of the first anniversary of the state's Srnog Check program, the state Air Resources Board will be conducting roadside tests of cars picked at random in the Los Angeles area to determine how well the program is working. 

In cooperation with the California Highway Patrol, cars will be flagged down in designated test areas for a 20-minute check to study maintenance habits and the extent of tampering with anti-smog systems. No citations will be issued for illegal engine tampering, since the study is solely for research purposes. 

On the eve of the state S1nog Check programs' first anniversary, the Air Resources Board will be conducting roadside tests of about 2,000 cars in major urban areas over the next four months to study how well the program is working and the extent of tampering with anti-smog devices. 

Gordon Duffy, Chairman of the state Air Resources Board, California's anti-smog agency, has released the following statement concerning the success of the Smog Check program. 

"In its first year, the Smog Check program has been every bit as effective in reducing pollution as we expected. About half of all the cars tested are being repaired or adjusted in ways that are reducing emissions as much as 50 percent. 

Gordon Duffy, Chairman of the California Air Resources Board and the Governor's Secretary of Environmental Affairs, today released the following statement concerning the Environmental Protection Agency's announced restrictions on the lead levels in gasoline: 

"We are pleased that the EPA has tollowed both the example and recommendation of the Air Resources Board in lowering the allowable lead levels in gasoline. 

The California Air Resources Board has approved $1.2 million for new acid rain research, highlighted by some of the first projects in the country to study the effects of acidic pollution on human health. 

Three health studies will be conducted by the University of California in addition to a pair of projects to be completed by other science labs that will study tlie cost of acid rain damage on buildings and other man-made structures. The Board's action begins the second year of a 5-year, $18 million research plan to study the unique aspects of California's acid rain problem. 

SACRAMENTO – State Treasurer Fiona Ma and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced today that the California Pollution Control Financing Authority (CPCFA) and CARB have successfully supported small businesses in purchasing over 40,000 cleaner trucks via the Heavy-Duty Vehicle Air Quality Loan Program. With 40,000 cleaner trucks on California roadways, it is the equivalent of removing over 13 million passenger cars from the road and 182 tons per year of particulate matter.

SACRAMENTO – The California Air Resources Board (CARB) today announced the approval of six new members to fill vacancies on its Research Screening Committee (RSC), an 11-member committee that provides guidance on the wide range of proposed and completed research projects relevant to CARB programs.

The California Air Resources Board today approved the final proposed 2022 Scoping Plan, a world-leading roadmap to address climate change that cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 85% and achieves carbon neutrality in 2045. The 2022 Scoping Plan provides a detailed sector-by-sector roadmap to guide the world’s fourth-largest economy away from its current dependance on petroleum and fossil gas to clean and renewable energy resources and zero-emission vehicles.

SACRAMENTO – Malibu Boats, LLC (Malibu) of Loudon, Tenn., has agreed to a settlement of $496,500 for violating California air quality regulations.

Gov. George Deukmejian today released the broad outline of a plan to reorganize his administration to create a Department of Waste Management. 

The new department would coordinate the state's efforts to manage the handling_, 1 disposal and cleanup of wastes.,, both toxic and non-toxic. The new department also will be the focal point for a coordinated effort with the private sector to develop new and more effective technology to deal effectively with wastes.
