The California Air Resources Board has approved a carburetor and four installation kits that can be used as replacements for original equipment on several models of 1975-84 Toyotas. The new kits, manufactured by Redline, Inc., of Torrance, California, are available for most Celicas and Coronas and for two and four wheel drive pickup trucks.
In addition to a Weber carburetor (model 32/36 DGAV/EV 33/B-1;1, the ARB-approved kit includes an adapted mounting plate, linkage, gaskets, hoses and related hardware. Specific models for which the kits are approved are noted on the packaging.
The recent approvals are in addition to several aftermarket Weber carburetor kits approved by the ARB over the last year for a variety of Porsche, Datsun and Volvo models. Those approvals include a Weber carburetor (model 40 IDA 3C) and components as a replacement for more costly fuel injection systems on many 1969-73 Porsche 9ll's.
Others include a Weber (model 32/36 DGV) for some 1962-72 Volvos originally equipped with S.U. or Stromberg carburetors, and a Weber {model 32/34 DFT) for some 1972-76 Datsun 610s and 620 pickups.
State anti-smog laws allow use only of those afterrnarket carburetors which have received Air Resources Board approval, granted if testing concludes that they do not increase emissions, compared to factory-installed equipment. Several applications tor ARB approval are pending from manufacturers offering carburetor kits to replace original equipment which is either unavailable or more expensive.
