On-Road Vehicle Programs

Most air pollution in California comes from vehicles driving on our roads and highways. This includes light-duty vehicles which are passenger cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks, as well as medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Pollution is often worst in communities near busy streets, roads, highways, and other freight corridors.

Cleaner vehicles can protect public health and improve air quality. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) works to cut air pollution from on-road vehicles and other sources. We do this through regulations, incentives, and other programs to encourage cleaner vehicles.

CARB has launched Drive Forward to look at potential new rules and programs to reduce pollution from cars, light trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. Learn about current and upcoming efforts and how you can help shape our programs.
