California Air Resources Board

CARB is in the process of building the next generation or "next gen" module of the Technology Clearinghouse. Next generation technology is cleaner than currently required by law. To provide public information on advanced technologies CARB must work with technology manufacturers, air districts, and industry to better understand technical feasibility, deployments, and costs. CARB is looking for public feedback on which air pollution sources to prioritize for review.

Once a source category is selected, CARB and the air districts will work together to evaluate advanced controls and alternative technologies that achieve emissions levels beyond existing regulatory requirements. Information on the selected source category will be published in the Technology Clearinghouse after an evaluation has been completed. 

Requests will be prioritized based on overall public need, potential benefits in disadvantaged communities statewide, and available resources.

Background

In 2018, CARB's Board adopted the Community Air Protection Blueprint. The Blueprint serves as the statewide strategy to reduce emissions of toxic air contaminants and criteria air pollutants in communities affected by a high cumulative exposure burden required by AB 617. The Blueprint describes the statutory requirements for CARB to expand and maintain the AB 617 Technology Clearinghouse.  As part of the Technology Clearinghouse, CARB committed to creating a new database system that will "contain forward-looking information on next generation technologies to support continued advancements, and to highlight opportunities to retrofit or replace emissions units with ultra-low or zero emissions technologies."
