Air Toxics Tool

Use this tool to help understand which toxic air pollutants come from different types of industries. You can also learn about the processes that go on in these industries that can produce other toxic substances. For basic information on what a toxic air pollutant is and what to consider when determining associated health risks, please see the Air Toxics Infographic.

The data used to develop this tool is outlined below. The substances listed are typically associated with each industry and may not be a complete listing. The industries listed are those under the jurisdiction of the 35 California Air Districts; however, CARB has the authority to regulate airborne toxics at the state level. This tool is not representative of all industries. To request information about a different industry please email TechnologyClearinghouse@arb.ca.gov. To search for substances by odor, please refer to the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry online odor search database.

Data

Data for this tool is derived from the AB 2588 Hot Spots Inventory Guidelines Appendix C, which lists substances that may be expected to be emitted by a particular process or industry. Appendix C was developed by CARB using many data sources, including U.S. EPA's "Locating and Estimating (L&E)" series for toxics substances; extensive online data searches for health studies and commercial uses associated with each of the AB 2588 substances; CARB's chemical speciation profiles; and emissions data reported to CARB's California Emission Inventory Database and Reporting System (CEIDARS). The CEIDARS data system contains reported emissions data for point sources in California under the AB 2588 program and was also used to help determine how commonly various types of processes (such as fuel combustion and solvent use) are connected with each industry. Substances for the Gas Station industry were supplemented with information found in the Gasoline Service Station Industrywide Risk Assessment Technical Guidance. Finally, OEHHA Health Values were associated using CARB's Hot Spots Analysis and Reporting Program (HARP) Health Table, and the Consolidated Table of OEHHA / CARB Approved Risk Assessment Health Values.
