Volvo Group North America, LLC Settles For $21,645
In June 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Volvo Group North America, LLC (Volvo), based in Greensboro, North Carolina, for Volvo’s violation of California’s Procedures for Reporting Failures of Emission-Related Components Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit.13, §§ 2141 et seq.).
CARB’s Enforcement Division was made aware of the issue during a Truck & Engine Manufacturers Association Compliance Workshop in 2018, wherein CARB’s Heavy-Duty Engine (HDE) program presented that while the overall HDE warranty claims rates were improving, individual component failures persisted, resulting in high warranty claims rates. CARB performed an investigation into the timeliness of various HDE manufacturers’ reporting of emission-related component failures to CARB’s Field Operations and Warranty Section. The investigation proved Volvo to be in violation for two Emission Warranty Information Reports, submitted later than the Procedures for Reporting Failures of Emission-Related Components regulation allows.
Volvo has diligently cooperated with CARB throughout the investigation and further understands the importance of timely reporting of warranty reports. The full penalty amount of $21,645 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
