United Airlines Case - $500,000 Settlement
In 1998, United Airlines (UA) reported that they were fueling ground service vehicles at all 13 of their California locations with Jet A, which is higher in sulfur and aromatic hydrocarbon content than the CARB diesel they should have been using. This is the last of the 1998 major airport ground service vehicle cases to be settled.
UA has paid $500,000 to settle this case: $100,000 in cash penalties to the Air Resources Board, and an additional $400,000 to fund a supplemental environmental project to be managed by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. This program will develop electric aircraft pushback tractor to replace diesel-powered pushbacks currently in use.
