$120,000 in Fines Paid by Union Pacific Railroad
In April 2006, Union Pacific Railroad (UP) paid $120,000 in penalties - $90,000 to the California Air Pollution Fund and $30,000 to the Peralta Community College District for violating air quality regulations.
An investigation by the ARB showed that UP failed to properly self-inspect their diesel trucks to assure the trucks met state smoke emission standards. ARB documented violations related to the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSI). To settle their case, UP agreed to the $120,000 penalty and to comply with the PSI Program.
