Stevedoring Services of America Case Settles for $25,000
An investigation by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) showed that Stevedoring Services of America (SSA), failed to comply with the requirements of the Large Spark Ignition (LSI) Regulation. SSA had brought new off-road LSI engines into California, intended for use in California’s ports, without having them first certified under CARB regulations. CARB requires newly manufactured off-road large spark ignition engines intended for distribution or use in California to first be tested for compliance with California emissions standards in order to obtain an Executive Order.
To settle the case, SSA has agreed to the $50,000.00 penalty and to comply with CARB’s regulations. SSA signed a settlement agreement on October 17, 2017 and paid a penalty of $25,000.00 to the California Air Pollution Control Fund, and $25,000.00 to the Prescott Joseph Community Center, Northern California Breathmobile Supplemental Environmental Project.
With the enforcement of the Large Spark Ignition Regulation, CARB has been able to reduce emissions around the ports, achieve a high compliance rate with in-use standards, and protect the health of all Californians, including those in the disadvantaged communities in and around California ports.
