California to Propose New Greenhouse Gas Reductions from Passenger Vehicles

About 50% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the State Come from Transportation and the Fuels they Use

  • Passenger vehicles are less polluting than they used to be, but transportation and the fuels they use still contribute greenhouse gas, smog, and toxic air pollutant emissions. 
  • These pollutants directly affect your health, the environment, and the economy.
  • Clean transportation is critical to meeting California’s health-based air quality and climate change standards—especially in areas with the dirtiest air in our state.

California Regulations Lead the Way

The California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Clean Cars regulations reduce pollutants from passenger cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs sold in California. In 2022, the California Air Resources Board adopted new regulations to continue to reduce emissions from these vehicles, including a requirement that 100% of new vehicle sales be zero-emission models by 2035. 

Upcoming Amendments to Advanced Clean Cars Regulations Will Reduce Pollutants and Help Consumers

More Stringent Greenhouse Gas Standards

CARB will update current requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles to support California’s goal of economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2045.

Improved Window Sticker

CARB will develop an improved window sticker to provide consumers with helpful information when considering a zero-emission vehicle purchase.

Other Updates

Staff will propose minor additional updates to further reduce harmful air pollution from light- and medium-duty vehicles and develop new standards to improve communication between vehicles and electric charging equipment.
