The purpose of this study was to quantify volatile organic compounds, toxic air contaminants, and methane emissions from produced water pond facilities in California. The study consisted of two phases. Gas and liquid phase samples were collected at each facility. The screening phase (Phase 1) was conducted first, with the goal of sampling produced water pond facilities throughout California to quantify regional variation in emissions. Facilities sampled in the characterization phase (Phase 2) were selected using Phase 1 data. The goal of Phase 2 was to identify and study in depth the highest emitting facilities near populated areas while also quantifying seasonal variation in emissions. In addition, Phase 2 data was used for predictive gas phase/liquid phase partitioning modeling.
