Diesel Fuel Comparison Study
Categories
Background
This page provides information regarding a fuel comparison study of CARB diesel and Federal Ultralow Sulfur Diesel fuels pursuant to the California Assembly Bill AB 679.
California has had in place a diesel fuel regulation that promotes and mandates clean burning diesel within the state. Recently, Federal diesel fuel regulations have been modified to reduce sulfur levels to accommodate advanced diesel engines and aftertreatment systems. The California legislature passed Assembly Bill 679 requiring the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to convene a panel of interested parties to develop a test protocol to measure the differences in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions between CARB diesel and the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2006 ultralow sulfur highway (Federal) diesel fuel. Tests will be performed to define any benefits of CARB diesel fuel against several different Federal diesel fuel blends using a combination of chassis and engine dynamometer testing. The results of these tests will help quantify the continuing benefits of using clean burning diesel fuel in the State. As required by Assembly Bill 679, this evaluation and its results will be submitted to the Senate Committee on Environmental Quality, the Senate Committee on Transportation and Housing, and the Assembly Committee on Transportation.
