Reefership Marine Services Ltd. Settles Ocean Going Vessel Fuels Violation For $19,500
In April 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Reefership Marine Services Ltd. (RMS), with its principal location in San Jose, Costa Rica, in the amount of $19,500, for the company’s violation of CARB’s air quality regulations.
A CARB staff investigation revealed that the RMS vessels Dole Atlantic, Dole Pacific, and Dole Caribbean failed to operate on compliant fuel upon entry into Regulated California Waters in 2021. CARB alleged three days of violation, one day per vessel, for a penalty of $6,500 per day. RMS took prompt action after being notified of these violations and, under CARB’s supervision, began operating in compliance.
To settle the case, RMS agreed to the $19,500 penalty for the violations and to comply with CARB regulations. The $19,500 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
