State and federal area designations indicate how each area in California fares in relation to the ambient air quality standards, which identify outdoor pollutant levels considered safe for the public. Area designations are based on the most recent available air quality data and are compared to the ambient air quality standards to indicate the healthfulness of air quality throughout the State.
