CARB develops regulations and policies to achieve ambient air quality standards, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, lower cancer risk from air toxics, and decrease exposures in communities disproportionately impacted by multiple air quality challenges. These efforts are intended to deliver public health, environmental, and economic co-benefits for all Californians. To support this work, CARB’s health research informs health analysis tools used to evaluate the health impacts and benefits of air pollution reduction programs and proposed regulations. This research also advances understanding of the links between climate and health, helps identify sources of air pollution, evaluates associated health impacts, and assesses the costs of inaction.
Health research initiatives include:
Health impacts of climate change and wildfire smoke
Indoor health pollution sources, exposure, and mitigation
Health analysis: expanding understanding of health outcomes and environmental justice factors
Air toxics
Community-level exposures and disparities
