CARB’s ambient air quality research supports regulatory mandates and public health goals by informing the State Implementation Plan (SIP), advancing the Community Air Protection Program (CAPP) under Assembly Bill (AB) 617, and addressing emerging ambient air quality challenges. This work aims to improve the understanding of air pollution sources, exposure risks, and effective mitigation strategies.
Ambient air quality research initiatives include:
Understanding the drivers of future ambient particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) formation
Understanding the challenges of meeting the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) in a changing climate
Air quality impacts of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Air quality impacts from dairy and agricultural operations
Reducing air quality disparities
