About
CARB's Coatings Program provides suggested control measures that act as model rules to assist the districts in the rule development process. Development, adoption, and enforcement of rules and regulations that control these emissions are primarily the responsibility of the local air districts.
Types of Coatings
Coatings include (but are not limited to) paints, varnishes, stains, and industrial maintenance coatings. Coatings can be applied to stationary and/or mobile sources.
Architectural Coatings
Architectural coatings are products that are applied to stationary structures and their accessories. They include house paints, stains, industrial maintenance coatings, traffic coatings, and many other products.
Local Air District Coatings Rules
In California, local air districts are responsible for limiting the quantity of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Architectural Coatings and Solvents.
Consumer Products Aerosol Coatings Activity
"Aerosol Coating Product" means a pressurized coating product containing "Pigment" or "Resin" that dispenses product ingredients by means of a propellant and is packaged in a disposable aerosol container for hand-held application, or for use in specialized equipment for ground traffic/marking applications.
