Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Settles Shore Power Case for $253,300
In January 2020, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) settled a case with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) of Tokyo, Japan, for violations of the Ocean-Going Vessel At‑Berth Regulation for $253,300. The violations were discovered during routine audits of MOL’s 2017 and 2018 Port of Oakland vessel fleet visits. The investigation by CARB revealed that from 2017 to 2018, MOL’s Oakland fleet did not meet the operational time limits for at least 70 percent of the visits, and did not reduce the auxiliary engine power generation by 70 percent, resulting in 936 violations. To settle this case, MOL agreed to the $253,300 penalty and to comply with CARB regulations. The per unit penalty was $250 per violation in 2017, and $350 per violation in 2018.
