Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. Settles For $50,000
In December 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC), with its principal location in Italy, in the amount of $50,000 for the company’s violation of CARB’s air quality regulations.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff revealed that the MSC vessel MSC Sindy, failed to operate on compliant fuel upon entry into Regulated California Waters in 2022. CARB alleged two days of violation for a penalty of $25,000 per day. MSC took prompt action after being notified of these violations and, under CARB’s supervision, began operating in compliance.
To settle the case, MSC agreed to the $50,000 penalty for the violations and to comply with CARB regulations. The $50,000 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
