Hurst Jaws of Life, Inc. Settles For $3,250
In December 2019, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) settled a case with Hurst Jaws of Life, Inc. (Hurst), located in Shelby, North Carolina, for violations of the Small Off-Road Engine regulation. Hurst self-disclosed that they sold in California thirteen uncertified engines with model years 2015−2017 in violation of California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 2751(a). Hurst agreed to pay a penalty of $250 per violation for a total of $3,250. The penalty was reduced by 50 percent from the maximum of $500 per unit under Health & Safety Code, section 43016, due to Hurst self-disclosing the violations, being cooperative throughout the investigation and settlement process, and because these were first-time violations for the company. Hurst no longer manufactures the subject units, and is now in compliance with the California regulation.
