Cost Considerations

Under funding from CARB, we have developed a low-cost, real time instrument for measuring toxic metals in the atmosphere. Under funding from the US EPA, we have purchased used (low-cost) Inficon HAPsite ER GC-MS instruments, and rehabilitated them, for measuring toxic volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere. And we are working on new technologies for measuring toxic organics in the particle phase. These real time or near real time instruments can help CARB, air districts and communities understand toxic compounds in the air, and they are already being used for this purpose.

The Roadmap does not include nascent technologies developed by our group and by others in California to track down these toxic emissions. Also, it does not set cost/performance goals for such instruments and instruments that are needed to assist communities. Adding these would assist in planning future funding opportunities.
