Comments on Application no. B0577

The problem with this application is not the source of biogas, from a 6,000 cow family-owned dairy operation in Madera, CA., but with the biogas transport and its ultimate use.

All pipelines leak and all leaks are dangerous but current federal regulations only require repair when the leaks threaten a populated area.

Biogas is 50-85% methane. Methane should not be widely used for transportation. It is not a clean energy fuel. It should only be used for transportation methods that are hard to electrify, such as a SAF fuel for airliners or for cargo ships. Even in those cases it should be heavily regulated and view only as a bridge fuel.
