City of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena Settles For $6,000
In June 2021, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the City of South Lake Tahoe for the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, with its principal location in South Lake Tahoe, California, reached a settlement agreement in the amount of $6,000. The $6,000 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
The City of South Lake Tahoe owns and operates an ice-skating rink, the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, which utilizes a medium-sized refrigeration system with a full charge of 1,100 pounds of a high global warming potential refrigerant. As a result, the business is subject to CARB’s Regulation for the Management of High Global Warming Potential Refrigerants for Stationary Sources (RMP Regulation).
In June 2018, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena was referred to CARB staff for enforcement action resulting in the issuance of three units of violation due to failure to perform leak checks as specified in California Code of Regulations (CCR), title 17, section 95386(a) (17 CCR § 95386(a)). South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena fully cooperated with the investigation, came into compliance quickly, and put into place policies and procedures to prevent similar issues in the future.
