Caterpillar Inc. Settles For $15,494
In October 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Caterpillar Inc. (Caterpillar), with its principal location in Deerfield, Illinois, in the amount of $15,494 for the company’s violation of CARB’s air quality regulations.
Caterpillar voluntarily disclosed the omission of certain auxiliary emission control devices (AECD) in certification applications for off-road compression-ignition engines. CARB documented violations as they related to the Off-Road Compression-Ignition Engines and Equipment Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 13, §§ 2420-2427).
Caterpillar fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. Caterpillar’s self-disclosure of the violations resulted in a penalty reduction and equitable resolution of the case for an assessed civil penalty of $15,494. The $15,494 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. Caterpillar has improved its documentation process to prevent future occurrences of documentation errors.
