California American Water Case Settles for $34,875.00
California American Water (CAW) agreed to pay $34,875.00 in penalties for violating air quality regulations; $26,150.00 will go to the California Air Resources Board (ARB) and $8,725.00 to the Peralta Community College District for distribution to participating California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) colleges. This settlement was reached in October 2013.
An investigation by the ARB showed that CAW failed to bring their fleet of heavy-duty diesel vehicles into compliance by the deadlines set forth in the Public Agency and Utility (PAU) regulation. CAW also failed to test and maintain records of smoke emissions from its fleet of heavy-duty diesel vehicles for years 2010 and 2011 in violation of the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP) regulation.
To settle the case, CAW has agreed to the $34,875.00 penalty and to comply with the PAU, PSIP and other applicable ARB regulations.
