BNSF and UP Railroads Case Settles for $1,200
During June 2011, SEIES staff met with Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) in a teleconference to discuss settlement of three locomotive idling violations that were issued during the Spring round of railroad inspections (April and May 2011). UPRR has corrected the deficiencies and agreed to pay a penalty of $1,200.00 to resolve this matter. Staff will meet with BNSF Railway to discuss their idling violations in July 2011.
Twice each calendar year, SEIES staff conducts inspections at California rail yards to verify compliance with the ARB/Railroad Statewide Agreement. The Agreement is also known as the “Railroad MOU.” The Agreement provides for biannual inspections of rail yards at most BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad facilities in California. Staff evaluates locomotives for compliance with idling, visible emission, and fuel standards. The entire SEIES unit participates in these inspections.
