BNSF and UP Railroads Case Settles for $6,400
During July 2011, SEIES staff met with BNSF Railway (BNSF) in a teleconference to discuss settlement of three locomotive idling violations that were issued during the Spring round of railroad inspections (April and May 2011). BNSF has corrected the deficiencies and agreed to pay a penalty of $6,400 to resolve this matter. Staff met with Union Pacific Railroad in June 2011 and resolved their violations for an additional $1,200. This brings total 2011 railroad settlements to $7,600.
Twice each calendar year, SEIES staff conducts inspections at California rail yards to verify compliance with the ARB/Railroad Statewide Agreement. The Agreement is also known as the “Railroad MOU.” The Agreement provides for biannual inspections of rail yards at most BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad facilities in California. Staff evaluates locomotives for compliance with idling, visible emission, and fuel standards. The entire SEIES unit participates in these inspections.
