California Air Resources Board

In support of California’s ambient air monitoring program, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) operates and maintains a Standards Laboratory to provide authoritative standards for determining whether data meets established data quality objectives. The Standards Laboratory provides metrological certification/verification services for the gases and equipment used to perform required quality assurance activities (i.e., calibrations, checks, and audits). The gases evaluated are contained in compressed gas cylinders and are typically single pollutant or multi-blends (CO, SO₂, and NO). The equipment evaluated includes ozone transfer standards, flow measuring devices (i.e., orifices, mass flow meters, and mass flow controllers) and meteorological sensors (i.e., wind speed, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity). The Standards Laboratory has developed a Quality Assurance Manual that details the policies and procedures that ensure consistent collection and validation of the data generated by the Standards Laboratory. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for conducting certifications/verifications are currently under review and are being revised.
