Overview: EV Mapping Tool Demo
Ted Lamm from the Center for Law, Energy & the Environment demonstrated his team’s free, publicly accessible map-based decision-making platform, which his team developed, to help identify high-priority areas and sites for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The platform is intended for use by local governments and a range of stakeholders in planning, siting, and investment decision-making processes. It incorporates criteria such as environmental and demographic indicators, existing EV and charging access, electric grid capacity, commercial and public spaces, and more. The tool is still in development and the team are seeking feedback to incorporate in the eventual statewide version.
Notes from September 5, 2024: Clean Mobility Options and Incentives Workgroup
- Ted Lamm (UC Berkeley, CLEE) presented a new EV Equity Mapping Tool aimed at helping local governments prioritize EV charging site selection and resource allocation. The tool overlays census and feasibility data to identify high-priority areas for charging infrastructure.
- Feedback on the tool is welcomed after attendees have had a chance to explore it. PG&E’s load capacity data and other utility data (SCE, SDGE, LADWP, SMUD) are integrated into the tool.
- Discussion covered equitable access to Level 2 charging, focusing on where people live and work.
- The tool currently does not factor in medium/heavy-duty EV fleets but could integrate additional data sets in the future, potentially using city-level data as test cases.
- Others raised concerns about safety at night in areas like Fruitvale, emphasizing the need for fast charging in unsafe areas.
- Ted is working with cities but is open to collaboration with councils of governments and Clean Cities Coalitions.
