Volkswagen AG, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., and AUDI AG Settle Gasoline Violations For $1,489,970
In December 2021, Volkswagen AG, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., and AUDI AG (collectively, “VW”), the German car manufacturer, settled several emission-related noncompliances with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that impacted approximately 70,000 of the companies’ gasoline vehicles from model years 2011 through 2019. The company voluntarily disclosed these issues to CARB between calendar years 2017 and 2020, which included the installation of unapproved software updates, the use of incorrect test procedures, and the sale of uncertified vehicles.
VW’s cooperation, responsiveness, and targeted mitigation efforts to address the violations resulted in an efficient and equitable resolution of the investigation. Of the total assessed penalty, $868,704 will be deposited to CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California’s air quality. The remaining amount of $621,266 will fund two Supplemental Environmental Projects that will supply advanced air filtration systems to schools in the Coachella Valley ($536,092) and Oakland areas ($85,174).
