Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. Settles Ocean Going Vessel Fuels Violation For $19,600
In February 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. (SSM), with its principal location in Vancouver, Canada, in the amount of $19,600 for SSM’S violation of CARB’s air quality regulations.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff showed that the SSM vessel YM Wreath failed to operate on compliant fuel upon entry into Regulated California Waters in 2021. CARB alleged one day and eighteen hours of violation for a penalty of $7,000 per day and $700 per hour. SSM took prompt action after being notified of these violations and, under CARB’s supervision, began operating in compliance.
To settle the case, SSM agreed to the $19,600 penalty for the violations and to comply with CARB regulations. The full settlement amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
