amendments to LCFS

Greetings,
The LCFS (esp. the biofuels component) is a major contributor to the destruction of grasslands in the US and tropical forests and savannas overseas. The changes being proposed could make this destruction worse.

World Bank studies have shown that using crops for biofuels increases food prices.

CARB is listening to the oil companies and biofuel companies that are profiting from all the Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits being given to renewable diesel, biodiesel and ethanol. CARB is evidently not listening to scientists who have learned from satellite, census and survey data that biofuels made from crops are NOT cleaner than fossil fuels.

Continuing to destroy natural forests and grasslands to produce biofuels for use in California is preventing many tropical countries from fulfilling the climate action plans they adopted under the Paris Climate Agreement. Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits should be used to accelerate the transition to electric cars and trucks. Credits for crop-based fuels should be eliminated. CARB’s proposed limits for crop-based fuels have no teeth and will merely encourage fraud.

Twenty per cent of US farmland is already used to grow corn and soybeans to produce biofuels. Use of this land for biofuels is not reducing our carbon emissions, but is increasing water scarcity, water pollution, loss of wildlife and food prices.

Thank you in advance for revisiting the LCFS amendments and following the climate science, not the fossil/bio fuel interests.
