Phoenix Co. Ltd. - Tokyo Settles For $8,450
In February 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with “Phoenix Co. Ltd.” - Tokyo (PCL), with its principal location in Tokyo, Japan, in the amount of $8,450 for violating CARB’s air quality regulations. The $8,450 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff showed that the PCL vessel Owusu Maru, failed to operate on compliant fuel upon entry into Regulated California Waters in 2021. CARB alleged one day and three hours of violation for a penalty of $6,500 per day and $650 per hour. PCL took prompt action after being notified of these violations and, under CARB’s supervision, began operating in compliance. To settle the case, PCL agreed to the $8,450 penalty for the violations and to comply with CARB regulations.
