Research Summary:

The main objective of this project is to increase understanding of metabolic health effects (e.g., incidence of diabetes, diabetic medication use, diabetes-related ED visits, hospitalizations, and death) in association with exposure to air pollutants throughout California. This project will develop models to estimate statewide concentration-response (C-R) functions between exposures to air pollutants, including criteria pollutants (NO2, PM2.5, and O3) and air toxics (benzene, 1,3-butadiene, total chromium, inorganic lead, metallic and inorganic nickel, and zinc), and metabolic health effects and resulting economic benefits. This project will identify CR-functions for not only the average statewide population, but also for sub-groups by race/ethnicity. The information gained through this contract will support CARB’s ability to evaluate the effects of its policies and programs, including a wide range of public health benefits.
