CARB statement on final Volkswagen settlement
For immediate release
SACRAMENTO - “The California Air Resources Board and Volkswagen have reached an agreement which includes a $153.8 million payment in civil penalties and cost reimbursement for VW’s use of “defeat devices” on the company’s diesel passenger cars for model years 2009-2016.
These penalties cover vehicles in both 2.0 liter and 3.0 liter models. While they are penalties for actual air quality rule violations, they represent much more than that. They are an acknowledgement of the dogged persistence of CARB staff in tracking down, identifying and revealing VW’s massive cheating in this case and CARB’s determination to protect Californians’ public health and quality of life.”
