SACRAMENTO - The Air Resources Board (ARB) announced today that it had reached am out-of-court settlement for $95,000 with Isuzu Motors Limited. The settlement reached after a complaint by the ARB stated that Isuzu had provided 1985 California tune-up stickers for 20 new 1986 Isuzu Impulses that were not originally intended for sale in California.
While not admitting guilt, Isuzu acknowledged that it had provided under the hood stickers, used only for new vehicles especially designed for sale in California. ARB investigators found those stickers placed over similar stickers used to identify new cars built for sale in other states before any of the vehicles were sold.
In addition, Isuzu confirmed that the cars had not undergone California's unique assembly-line testing procedures, necessary for cars certified for sale in the state. The cars were later discovered at Sierra Motors in Glendora, California.
An Island Imports representative placed the 1985 California tune-up labels over existing 1986 out-of-state tune-ups labels after the cars were delivered to Sierra Motors' lot.
ARB investigators found the out-of-state stickers after being notified by the California Department of Motor Vehicles of possible irregularities in Sierra Motors' title that were revealed during a routine review.
