Maesa LLC Settles For $67,500
In September, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Maesa LLC (Maesa) of New York, New York reached a settlement for violations related to CARB’s Regulation for Reducing Emissions from Consumer Products (Consumer Products Regulation), as specified in California Code of Regulations, title 17, sections 94507 et seq.
An investigation by CARB staff revealed that Maesa sold, supplied, offered for sale, or manufactured for use in California, products regulated in the Hair Styling Products category, that were not in compliance with CARB’s Consumer Products Regulation. The products Hairitage Magic Spell Texturizing Spray and Hairitage Soak it Up Dry Conditioner contained concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that exceeded the standards specified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94509(a). The violation contributed to excess VOC emissions in the Hair Styling Products (aerosol/pump spray) category.
Maesa fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. The Hairitage Soak it Up Dry Conditioner has not been manufactured since June 2022, and Maesa is making adjustments to the Hairitage Magic Spell Texturizing Spray product to ensure its compliance with the Consumer Products Regulation. The full penalty amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
