Hempel (USA), Inc. Settles For $11,100
In June 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with Hempel (USA), Inc. (Hempel), with its principal location in Conroe, Texas in the amount of $11,100 for the company’s violations of CARB’s air quality regulations.
Hempel voluntarily disclosed violations that they sold, supplied, and/or offered for sale paint thinners and a multi-purpose solvent for use in California containing concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC) exceeding the standards specified in the Consumer Products Regulation (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 17, § 94507 et. seq.). The VOC violations resulted in 2.22 tons of excess VOC emissions.
The penalty amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. Hempel fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter and ceased their sale of the noncompliant products in California.
