Comments on 3.13.25 Embodied Carbon Workshop

Thanks for the informative workshop and update on baselines and implementation. I'll aim to keep comments brief:

1) regardless of what methodology is used for establishing a baseline, there should be a target of ZERO, and a goal of reaching it (aka buildings can become the Earth's sixth carbon sink

2) to this end, please recognize biobased resources (especially rapidly-renewable ones such as hemp, straw, bamboo etc.) as carbon storing, as a means to offset emitting resources (typically concrete, steel, glass, etc.) to make getting to ZERO possible, and

3) prioritize A-series emissions, aka Cradle-to-Gate, as critical upfront ones over those of operating or whole life; just as deconstruction has taken hold in the past few decades, carbon recapture in various forms will advance and end-of-life emissions limited if not eliminated.

I'm attaching a presentation we gave at the AIACA Monterey Design Conference and recently updated for an AIA East Bay Zero Net Carbon Design Continuing Education series, fyi. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or requests for further information.

Thank you,

David Arkin, AIA
