Drayage trucks are on-road, heavy-duty trucks that transport containers and bulk to and from seaports and intermodal railyards. Land ports of entry, which provide controlled entry to or departure from the United States, are not considered seaports or intermodal railyards.
Drayage trucks operate intensively in and around freight facilities, contributing to localized air pollution in communities already burdened by high levels of diesel emissions. Although no new regulations currently apply to drayage trucks, CARB remains committed to advancing strategies that reduce and protect public health in port-adjacent and rail-adjacent neighborhoods. CARB strongly encourages voluntary adoption of zero-emission (ZE) drayage trucks, recognizing the significant air quality and climate benefits these vehicles provide. Operators who adopt ZE technologies support cleaner air and help accelerate progress towards California’s long-term ZE freight goals.
