Dr. Brite, LLC Settles For $30,000
In September 2023, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Dr. Brite, LLC (Dr. Brite) of Santa Ana, California reached a settlement for Dr. Brite’s violation of CARB’s Regulation for Reducing Emissions from Consumer Products (Consumer Products Regulation), specified in California Code of Regulations, title 17, sections 94507 et seq.
An investigation by CARB staff revealed that Dr. Brite sold, supplied, and offered for sale in California, nonaerosol general purpose cleaner products that were not in compliance with CARB’s Consumer Products Regulation. Dr. Brite’s Alcohol Surface Wipes, Multi-Purpose Cleaners and Calming Yoga Mat Cleaner contained concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC) that exceeded the 0.5 percent by weight VOC standard for the General Purpose Cleaner category specified in the California Code of Regulations, title 17, section 94509(a). The violation occurred over a two and half year period and resulted in 25 tons of excess VOC emissions. The penalty in this case was significantly reduced due to financial hardship.
Dr. Brite fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter. In order to come into compliance with the California Consumer Products Regulation, Dr. Brite is no longer manufacturing the Alcohol Surface Wipes and Calming Yoga Mat Cleaner. The Multi-Purpose Cleaners have been blocked from being sold in California. The full penalty amount will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality.
