Research Summary:

The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District (SDAPCD) in collaboration with the Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) developed the Portside Air Quality Improvement and Relief (PAIR) program. It is a two-year program dedicated to improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) in homes of the Portside Environmental Justice Neighborhoods Community, which is an area exposed to harmful air pollution levels because of nearby major freeways and intense freight, port, and industrial activities. The PAIR program began accepting applications in March 2022 and is anticipated to finish by late 2023. Participants receive the free delivery and installation of both an indoor air monitor and an air purifier. Data on indoor air quality will be gathered from over 500 homes for around 30 days before the air purifier is installed. After the installation, indoor air quality data will continue to be collected. Particulate matters of 10, 2.5, and 1.0 micrometers or less in diameter, carbon dioxide, humidity, and temperature will be collected by the air monitor at five-minute intervals continuously. In this project, the project team will perform data analysis on indoor and outdoor air pollution data collected in the PAIR program.
