$8,500 in Fines Paid by City of Commerce
The City of Commerce paid $8,500 in penalties ($6,375 to the California Air Pollution Control Fund, and $2,125 to the Peralta Community College District for distribution to participating California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) colleges), for violating air quality regulations. This settlement was reached in May 2008 and the case was closed in June 2008. An investigation by ARB showed that this time, the City of Commerce failed to comply with the Fleet Rule for Transit Agencies – Urban Bus Requirements by exceeding the transit fleet Particulate Matter (PM) emission total. The City of Commerce also failed to properly self-inspect the portion of their diesel-powered vehicles fleet that falls under the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP).In 2004, the City of Commerce was fined $4,000 for violations of reporting requirements and for exceeding the NOx emission standard of the Transit Fleet rule. To settle the current case, the City of Commerce agreed to pay the $8,500 penalty and to comply with the Fleet Rule for Transit Agencies – Urban Bus Requirements and PSIP.
