Project Summary 20180418
The Project consists of the installation and operation of a covered lagoon anaerobic digester at Joseph Gallo Farm’s Cottonwood Dairy and cheese plant in Atwater, California. The Project treats manure generated by the dairy and wastewater from an adjacent cheese plant that otherwise would be sent to two anaerobic storage lagoons on the premises. In the project scenario, these lagoons are used to hold storm water runoff and serve as temporary storage sites for flush water. The dairy has approximately 5,000 animals on site including milking cows, dry cows, and bulls housed in free stall barns and open lots. Manure is flushed from free stall barns, the milking parlor, and the feed aprons of open lots using a combination of wastewater from the cheese plant and freshwater. Solid/liquid separators remove large solids from the waste stream for composting or use as bedding at the dairy. The liquid waste stream produced by the solids separation process is sent to the digester where it decomposes under anaerobic conditions to produce biogas. Biogas collected from the digester is used to generate electricity or is combusted in an open flare.
The Project operates two Caterpillar engines and generators with a total nameplate Verification Report for The Cottonwood Dairy Organic Waste Digestion Project – CAR 578 Climate Action Reserve 4 G:\DATA\Project\Grey K Trading - 5GREYK01\Official Report Folder\02_11 Final Verification Report\Report.doc 03/03/2011 capacity of 750 KW to produce power for the cheese plant. Digester effluent is directed a storage lagoon and used for irrigation water by the farm. Emission reductions generated by the Project were previously registered with CAR under the Livestock Project Protocol.
