AES Southland LLC Case Settles for $127,800
In April 2014, AES Alamitos LLC (AES) paid $128,700.00 in penalties for violating California’s Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) (California Code of Regulations, title 17, sections 95350 et seq.) (SF6-GIS Regulation).
The SF6-GIS Regulation establishes annual SF6 emission limits and requires owners of GIS equipment to monitor track and report SF6 emissions annually. The SF6-GIS Regulation set forth a maximum annual SF6 emission rate for 2011 of ten percent. AES reported that it exceeded the 2011 emission rate limit. Upon discovery of the emission rate exceedance, AES quickly implemented repairs and changes to their business practices to minimize future SF6 emissions and agreed to the $128,700.00 penalty.
