Correct Testing Method Factsheet (Testers)

As a Clean Truck Check credentialed tester, it is your responsibility to ensure the correct testing method is performed on vehicles you are testing. If the incorrect testing method is performed on a vehicle, it will likely prevent test results from being submitted for said vehicle in CTC-VIS.

Vehicles requiring non-OBD testing:

  • 2012 model year and older diesel engines should undergo the Opacity and Visual Inspection testing method.
  • 2017 model year and older alternative fuel engines should undergo the Visual Inspection testing method.

Vehicles requiring OBD testing:

  • 2013 model year and newer diesel/diesel hybrid engines should undergo the OBD testing method.
  • 2018 model year and newer alternative fuel engines should undergo the OBD testing method.

Determining Correct Testing Method

To determine the correct testing method for a vehicle, you should take the following actions:

  • Confirm engine model year by checking engine/emissions family name on vehicle’s emission control label
  • Check VIN plate on driver’s side doorjamb of vehicle to confirm the correct VIN
  • Confirm vehicle’s fuel type

If Unable to Submit Correct Test Type:

  • Email hdim@arb.ca.gov
  • The subject line should include VIN
  • The body of email should include test type performed, vehicle engine model year, vehicle fuel type and screenshot of CTC-VIS error message
  • Documentation should include clear and legible photos of:
    • The Emissions Control Label (ECL) 
    • The vehicle with the engine compartment open showing the engine and ECL 
    • The vehicle showing the VIN (typically, VIN plate is located on the doorjamb)
    • The vehicle showing the license plate
