Research Summary:
This research project will establish a partnership between the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to study airport and rail emissions in Los Angeles. The study will utilize a combination of mobile measurements using a Mobile Measurement Platform (MMP) and stationary measurements. The mobile measurements will examine the spatial extent of aircraft emissions around Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), comparing the findings to previous measurements. The stationary measurements will be used to determine the composition of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 and its health effect inside and outside of the airport and rail plumes. The team will work closely with community partners to hold pollution awareness workshops, identify air monitoring sites of interest, and deploy monitors to community-chosen sites.
