BP Products North America, Inc. Settles For $873,750
In December 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reached a settlement with BP Products North America Inc. (BPPNA), with its principal location in Blaine, Washington, for the company’s violation of California’s Reformulated Gasoline Regulation, under the California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 2250-2273.5.
An investigation conducted by CARB staff showed that BPPNA failed to meet the applicable motor fuel reporting requirements. CARB documented violations as they related to the California Reformulated Gasoline Regulation. To settle the case, BPPNA agreed to the penalty of $21,843.75 per violation for a total of $873,750.00. BPPNA fully cooperated with CARB to resolve this matter.
Of the total amount, $436,875 will be deposited into CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, which provides funding for projects and research to improve California's air quality. The remaining amount of $436,875 will fund two Supplemental Environment Projects (SEPs). The amount of $171,000 will fund the SEP “Insecticide Reduction: Empowering Children and Adults to Become Defenders of Clean Air with California Safe Schools.” This SEP ensures that all students, teachers, staff, and community members who live near school sites are in a safe, toxic-free environment. The remaining $235,875 will fund the SEP “Cleaner Air for Kids-Zero Emission School Bus Funding in South Coast Air Basin.” This SEP provides financial incentives to public school districts within the South Coast air basin to replace nine older high polluting diesel school buses with zero emissions buses and to install supporting infrastructure.
